To help establish where in the globe our journey to Pakistan in 2006 took place, I found these two maps from studies of Aurel Stein to be very helpful. They date to 1916, well before current political boundaries were imposed on the area. Mr. Stein was taking as many trips possible into the Taklamakan desert from Kashmir where he had wrangled a job as school superintendent. His story is well told in Annabel Walker's book: Aurel Stein, Pioneer of the Silk Route. The other map is a T-shirt artist's rendition of the trip we took through the Karakoram Highway (KKH). It compares well with the Perry-Castaneda version from the University of Texas Library in Austin which appears in my book, Listening to Pakistan-A Woman's Voice in a Veiled Land
